"The Greatest Show on Earth” is what it’s called
and sure enough if you have ever been you would certainly agree that’s
what it is. Costumes and street parades? That’s just the tip of
the iceberg. Picture this calypso tents, calypso competition,
steelband competition (steelpan is the only instrument given to the wo rld
in the twentieth century), band launches from six months prior, costume
bands competition, kiddies carnival and of course the culmination of it
all on Carnival Monday and Tuesday in the explosive two day street
parades and party of costumed bands, steel bands, music trucks and the
element that makes no other Carnival experience its equal, the energy
and excitement of the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
Added to this
already electric package are the visits to the pan yards
(the steelband practice locations),
numerous fetes, J’ouvert ( a contraction of the French ‘jour
ouvert’ or day begun) and if it’s your first time to T & T
the delights of our local cuisine, the city of Port of
Spain, St. James, the city that never sleeps and perhaps
some out of town attractions. Trinidad and
Tobago’s Carnival is just your one step to complete release,
excitement, creativity and colour, yes it’s the greatest
show on earth!
“Parties are
a serious pastime here and Carnival is the biggest bash of
all.” The Wild Mix of Trinidad and Tobago, National
Geographic, March ‘94 |
